ABOUT US

FENAPIUPE started as a small group of teachers in the first Convention of English teachers held at ESPOL in Guayaquil in 1986.  For the first time teachers from Ecuadorian universities joined to have a National Organization open to English teachers whose purpose is “to improve the standards of English teaching in Ecuador giving op
portunities for all the teachers to achieve a high level of proficiency and giv
e them information about current research studies on teaching and methodology.”   To reach this objective they decided to organize a National Congress every two years at any of the affiliate universities and offer seminars all around the country.

From the beginning FENAPIUPE has had the support of ESPOL, where we have had our office for twenty-five years.  We have also been sponsored by the United States Embassy and the British Council until 2000 when they left Ecuador. The universities have collaborated by letting us use their premises for our events. The publishers and book distributors have also contributed to our Association’s efforts not only with material for our conferences, but also by bringing well-known international lecturers.
    At first FENAPIUPE m
embers were only university teachers, but later we opened our membership to all the English teachers.  In 1989 FENAPIUPE became a TESOL member.  TESOL means Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and its headquarters are in the United States.  In 1999 we joined IATEFL, which stands for the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language and is located in the United Kingdom.
